Drive Clean Trucks in Stockholm

Although trucks only represent five to ten percent of all traffic in Stockholm, they cause almost half of the environmental impact from traffic. An environmental adaptation of road haulage is therefore of high urgency. This could involve anything from logistics and planning to reduce transports and maximise loading, to a transfer to cleaner vehicles and renewable fuels.

The City of Stockholm has worked actively with environmental adaptation of passenger cars since the mid 1990s. As a result, a wide range of clean cars are now available on the market and the number of filling stations for renewable fuels is rapidly expanding both in Stockholm and the rest of Sweden.

The development for heavy vehicles has been considerably slower. There are still only a few truck models running on those renewable fuels that are in use large-scale. Additional models have been launched recently or are on their way to the market.

CleanTruck project

Through the CleanTruck project, the City of Stockholm in collaboration with IDS (International Diesel Service), AGA Gas AB, hauliers and truck suppliers will pave the way for low carbon transport throughout Sweden.

The aim of CleanTruck is to establish new filling stations for renewable truck fuel, and to demonstrate new types of clean trucks in the Stockholm region. Eco-driving, nitrogen-filled tyres and cooling units with liquid carbon dioxide for refrigerated vehicles are also promoted through the project, aiming to further reduce pollutants from goods distribution. A number of private hauliers are participating in the project. In total, around 80 clean trucks will be purchased, driven and evaluated through the project.

CleanTruck aims at making a real difference. Filling stations, clean fuels and trucks are introduced simultaneously. Scania offers ethanol-fuelled trucks and Mercedes will supply electric hybrid trucks. Volvo offers trucks that run on a mix of diesel and biogas as well as electric hybrid trucks.

Purchase grants

CleanTruck offers a purchase grant to companies investing in clean trucks for use in goods transport in Stockholm. Companies joining CleanTruck are also offered support to encourage eco-driving, for purchasing carbon dioxide cooling units and for nitrogen in tyres.

Four-year initiative

CleanTruck will run for four years, 2010-2013. The project has been granted EU funding of approximately SEK13 million from Life+. The participating companies contribute approximately SEK19 million. Energimyndigheten is supporting the project with 1,4 million SEK and a further SEK 3 million comes from Vinnova.

Carbon dioxide cools food

Liquid carbon dioxide (LIC) is cooling the food in trucks run by Dafgårds a Swedish producer of readymade food. The project CleanTruck supports companies to try this technology, which reduces climate impact from cooling food transports.
