Substanse abuse is a serious problem in many parts of the world. In order to protect young people, alcohol & drug prevention is an area with high priority in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden.

The STAN programme

The City of Stockholm has adopted a programme, The STAN programme, which addresses Tobacco, Alcohol and Narcotics.

The Stockholm Survey

Since the early 1970s the City of Stockholm has carried out so-called “drug use surveys” on a regular basis. Originally the survey comprised a questionnaire aimed at Grade 9 students in lower secondary school, but since the year 2000 the
study has also included students in Grade 2 in upper secondary school.

Social Development Unit

As a part of a broad strategy, the Social Affairs Administration in Stockholm has initiated Social Development Unit. One of it's main tasks is to be a resource center for primary prevention of alcohol, drugs and crime. The city of Stockholm is divided into 14 City Districts, and Social Development Unit support professionals to prevent drug problems in their own local part of the city. By "professionals" we mean persons who work with drug and/or youth issues, such as social workers, school personnel, police, local politicians, etcetera. Main task is to promote a better local alcohol-, drug- and crime preventive work.

In short, other tasks are (ex):

  • "Translate" research findings and models into practical work.
  • Support the districts in Stockholm to implement city programs.
  • Assist and inspire the local coordinators and the city districts in their prevention work.
  • Conduct drug surveys as a part of being up-to-date with the drug situation.
  • Produce different kind of information materials.
  • Initiate and/or arrange drug prevention education at different levels for professionals.  
  • Conduct locally anchored media campaigns.
