General elections and referendums

Aktuellt i staden

The Election Committee (valnämnden) is the local election authority in Stockholm. The Committee is responsible for the practical implementation of elections which includes to equip and man the polling stations, run the preliminary counting of the votes and to report the results.

The county administrative board (Länsstyrelsen) is the regional election authority. The county administrative board decides on electoral district boundaries and is responsible for the final counting of the votes in all elections.

The Swedish Election Authority (Valmyndigheten) is the central administrative authority. The Authority is among other things responsible for compiling the electoral registers and the printing of voting cards.

Elections

General elections are held every fourth year in Sweden. By voting, we decide who will represent us in the Riksdag, the county council (landstingsfullmäktige) and in the municipal council (kommunfullmäktige). In this way, we decide the political orientation of Sweden and how Sweden will be governed for the following four years.

Every fifth year we have an election to appoint our representatives in the European Parliament.

In 2014 are both election to the European Parliament and general elections to the Riksdag, in the county council election and in the local municipal. The pre-election starts 18 days before the election day.

Right to vote

All Swedish citizens who are 18 years old have the right to vote in the general election to the Riksdag, in the county council election and in the local municipal election. As a foreign citizen you have the right to vote in the elections to the municipal council and county council if you are nationally registered in Sweden since three years or are nationally registered in Sweden and a citizen of another country member of the European Union (EU), Norway or Iceland. The election to the municipal council refers to both general elections and referendums.

You have the right to vote in the election to the European Parliament if you are a Swedish citizen, are 18 years old and are/have been nationally registered in Sweden or if you are citizen of another country member of the EU and are nationally registered in Sweden (and have noticed the electoral register at least 30 days before the election day). If you attend the Swedish election to the European Parliament, you can not vote in any other EU-country. Everyone who is allowed to participate in the election will receive a voting card by post. The voting card contains details about which elections you can vote in, what polling station you should vote at, where it is located and its opening hours.

The Election Authority provides a brief introduction in how to vote in 15 different languages, with the purpose of spreading the Swedish voting procedure to as many persons as possible that are entitled to vote in Sweden, or want to learn more about how to vote in this country.
